Zainab Bangura

Biography
Haja Zainab Hawa Bangura was born in 1959 in Sierra Leone. She worked in journalism and civil society before entering government. She served as Minister of Health and Sanitation and later as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
She was appointed UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict (2012–2017), leading global efforts to end rape as a weapon of war and to support survivors. She has also held senior roles at the UN in other capacities.
Historical Context
Sierra Leone’s civil war (1991–2002) was marked by widespread sexual violence. Bangura’s work on conflict-related sexual violence drew on her country’s experience and extended to crises worldwide.
