Biography

Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings was born in 1948. She married Jerry John Rawlings, who led Ghana as head of state and later as elected president from 1981 to 2001. As First Lady she did not limit herself to ceremonial roles.

In 1982 she founded the 31st December Women’s Movement (DWM), which grew into one of Ghana’s largest women’s organisations, promoting literacy, livelihoods, and political participation. She later entered party politics and in 2016 became the first woman to run for president on a major party ticket in Ghana.

Historical Context

Ghana’s Fourth Republic began in 1992. Nana Konadu used her platform to push for women’s rights and social programmes. Her presidential run highlighted both the possibility and the obstacles for women in top office.

What She Fought For

Nana Konadu fought for women’s political and economic empowerment, girls’ education, and community development. The DWM worked on health, microfinance, and advocacy. She has been a vocal figure in Ghanaian politics and women’s organising.
