Felicia Adetoun Ogunsheye
Nigeria's first female professor. She achieved the milestone in 1973 as a professor of Library Science at the University of Ibadan and spent her career modernizing library education and promoting women's participation in higher education.
Biography
Felicia Adetoun Ogunsheye was born in 1926 in Ogun State, Nigeria. She pursued higher education at a time when very few Nigerian women had access to university-level studies. She built her career in library science and information management, eventually joining the University of Ibadan where she rose through the academic ranks.
In 1973, she became the first woman in Nigeria to be appointed a full professor, earning the title in Library Science at the University of Ibadan. This achievement was a landmark moment for Nigerian women in academia.
Historical Context
In the early decades after Nigeria's independence, universities were expanding but the professoriate was almost entirely male. Women who pursued academic careers were rare, and those who aimed for the highest rank faced deep skepticism. Ogunsheye broke through that barrier at a time when the very idea of a female professor was unfamiliar in Nigeria.
What She Fought For
Ogunsheye was committed to modernizing library science education in Nigeria. She believed that access to organized information and well-trained librarians was essential for national development. She was instrumental in building the infrastructure of library education at the University of Ibadan and trained generations of librarians and researchers.
She also championed women's participation in higher education, mentoring female students and academics at a time when the academic pipeline for women was extremely narrow.
