Biography

Bolanle Awe was born in 1933 in Oyo State, Nigeria. She is a historian and gender studies scholar who became the first female professor in the Department of History at the University of Ibadan, one of Nigeria's oldest and most respected universities.

Her academic work focused on recovering and documenting the roles women played in Nigerian history, at a time when mainstream historical scholarship largely overlooked their contributions. She founded the Women's Research and Documentation Centre, which became a vital hub for gender research and advocacy in Nigeria.

In 2005, she was appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She has been called a Nigerian "intellectual hero" for her contributions to scholarship and social advocacy.

Historical Context

Nigerian historiography in the mid-20th century focused heavily on political events, male leaders, and institutional development. The experiences and contributions of women were largely absent from the academic record. Awe recognized this gap and dedicated her career to filling it, creating a body of scholarship that placed Nigerian women at the center of historical analysis.
