Biography

Ameyo Stella Adadevoh was born on 27 October 1956 in Lagos, Nigeria, into a family of physicians. She studied medicine at the University of Lagos and specialised in endocrinology. She was a consultant physician at First Consultants Medical Centre in Lagos when, in July 2014, a patient arrived with symptoms that she correctly identified as Ebola virus disease — Nigeria's first case.

She insisted on keeping the patient in isolation and prevented him from leaving the hospital, despite pressure. Her actions contained the outbreak and saved countless lives. She contracted Ebola while caring for the patient and died on 19 August 2014. She was posthumously honoured by the Nigerian government and internationally.

Historical Context

The 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa threatened to spread to Nigeria, a country of over 180 million people. Dr Adadevoh's quick diagnosis, refusal to release the patient, and insistence on infection control prevented a catastrophic outbreak in Nigeria and showed the critical role of frontline healthcare workers.
