Biography
Ibiagbanidokibubo Asenite "Agbani" Darego was born on 22 December 1982 in Abonnema, Rivers State, Nigeria. She won the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant in 2001 and went on to win Miss World 2001 in South Africa — the first Black African to hold the title.
After her reign she pursued modelling and appeared in international campaigns. She used her visibility to advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and for girls’ education in Nigeria and across Africa, working with organisations such as the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Global Fund.
Historical Context
Beauty pageants were often criticised for narrow standards; Agbani Darego’s win was celebrated as a breakthrough for African representation on a global stage. She used the platform to speak about health and education rather than only fashion and appearance.
