Samia Suluhu Hassan
Tanzania's first female president, sworn in March 2021 after the death of John Magufuli. She shifted the country's COVID response, reopened diplomatic relations, and liberalised the media.
Biography
Samia Suluhu Hassan was born in 1960 in Zanzibar, Tanzania. She trained in public administration and development, and built a career in government before entering politics. She served as a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives and later as Minister of State in the Vice President's Office for Union Affairs.
In 2015, she was selected as running mate to John Magufuli and became Tanzania's first female Vice President. She brought a calm, measured style to a government known for its confrontational approach. When Magufuli died suddenly in March 2021, she was sworn in as President, making her Tanzania's first female head of state and the first female president in East Africa.
Historical Context
Tanzania under Magufuli had become increasingly isolated. The government denied the severity of COVID-19, discouraged testing and masks, and faced international criticism. Media freedoms were curtailed, opposition leaders were harassed, and diplomatic relations with Western partners had frayed. The country needed a reset.
What She Fought For
Suluhu Hassan moved quickly to change course. She acknowledged the COVID-19 pandemic publicly and encouraged vaccination, a significant shift from her predecessor's stance. She reopened relations with international partners and invited exiled opposition figures to return. She lifted bans on several media outlets and signalled a more open approach to governance.
She has continued to champion women's participation in politics and has spoken about the need for inclusive leadership. Her presidency represents a new chapter for Tanzania and for women's political leadership in the region.
