Biography
Sahle-Work Zewde was born in 1950 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She studied natural sciences in France before embarking on a career in diplomacy. She joined the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and rose through the ranks, serving as ambassador to Senegal, Djibouti, and France, and as Ethiopia's Permanent Representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa.
She then moved to the United Nations, where she served as Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union and Head of the UN Office to the African Union. She was appointed Director-General of the UN Office at Nairobi (UNON), becoming the first woman to hold that position.
