Biography

Inonge Mbikusita-Lewanika was born in 1943 in Zambia (then Northern Rhodesia). She studied in Zambia and the United States and worked in education and development before entering politics. She was elected to Parliament and served as minister in different portfolios.

She was Zambia’s Ambassador to the United States and later Ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union. She has been a vocal advocate for women’s political participation and for multiparty democracy in Zambia and the region.

Historical Context

Zambia gained independence in 1964. After decades of one-party rule, the move to multiparty politics in the 1990s opened space for figures like Mbikusita-Lewanika to combine ministerial and diplomatic roles with advocacy for gender equality and governance.
