Baleka Mbete

Biography
Baleka Mbete (full name Baleka Mmakota Mbete-Kgositsile) was born in 1949. She went into exile during apartheid and worked for the ANC in Tanzania and elsewhere. She is a published poet and has been involved in culture and education.
After the transition to democracy she served as Deputy President of South Africa (2008–2009) and as Speaker of the National Assembly (2004–2008 and 2014–2019) — the first woman to hold the latter post. She has been a senior figure in the ANC and in Parliament.
Historical Context
Baleka Mbete came of age in the liberation movement and helped build the ANC abroad. After 1994 she helped shape South Africa’s Parliament and the role of women in its leadership.
